XenApp forklift upgrade or modern virtual apps?

Right now, many organizations are stuck on XenApp 6.5 virtual apps and an architecture that is 20 years old! It’s a tricky situation for customers as XenApp 6.5 approaches end-of-life (EOL). Migrating to XenApp 7 means a massive forklift upgrade because you are moving to a whole new architecture - IMA to FMA - which no IT department wants to undertake. Moving forward requires a time-consuming, painful transition. And when you're done? You're still tethered to an on-prem implementation that comes with complexity. And what comes with complexity is cost! (If you’re not thinking about XenApp EOL, you should be—it’s only a year away, and switching to FMA takes 6+ months.)

So how do you make it to the other side? Where do you go from here for a virtual app solution? Until recently you only had two options - more Citrix (more complexity) or switching to VMware (more complexity). If your goal is to simplify and reduce costs, now you have a third option. And that’s where Workspot can help. Now there's a better way! XenApp 6.5 forklift upgrade or Modern Virtual Apps

Workspot Cloud Apps – the cloud-first way

Workspot VDI 2.0 has revolutionized desktop virtualization. It all started with Cloud Desktops - a multi-tenant, infinitely scalable, cloud-native VDI solution for deploying Windows desktops either on Microsoft Azure or on-premises. Cloud Apps leverages that same architecture to deliver virtualized applications through shared hosted desktop sessions.

Cloud Apps enable IT to rapidly provision RDSH server virtual machines. Unlike other solutions, Cloud Apps do not need dedicated hardware to run a controller, load balancer, broker, gateway, web-interface, or a separate SQL database to handle session creation, high availability, and failover. Workspot Control replaces all of that. The unique brokering technology within Workspot Control provides an infinitely scalable, highly available solution for virtualizing applications. Easily publish apps to 10, 100, 1000 or millions of users.

With Cloud Apps you can have an infinite number of application servers in as many Azure locations as you need. It's one reason users get a much better experience than with legacy solutions - because you're bringing the apps closer to them. Workspot is a vastly more modern, all-cloud solution that eliminates all the complexity you've been dealing with. It was built with a modern, micro-services architecture similar to how Facebook and Twitter are built, which allows it to be deployed in hours and scale to millions of users. Plus, it’s instantly available under a subscription model! Oh and PS: If you're not ready to move your entire datacenter infrastructure to Azure, we support a hybrid environment of Azure regions and on- premises datacenters better than anyone, so no worries there.

Workspot Cloud Apps are the modern way to publish apps

If you don’t know about Workspot and you’re hesitant to move to FMA, you might think Citrix Cloud is an option. If you’re interested in drilling down on the differences, check out our solution brief “Workspot versus Citrix Cloud”. Briefly, though, the reason you should think twice is because of how it’s designed. Citrix Cloud enables you to avoid migration onto FMA because Citrix hosts many FMA architecture components in the cloud. Essentially Citrix creates an instance of a farm per customer and takes on the day-to-day management.

Sounds great, right? However, consider this: Citrix Cloud is a hosting service built on the same on-premises FMA architecture. Rather than create a cloud-native solution they have just moved the existing complexity to a hosted environment. Since they host all that complexity, all the requirements for patching, scaling, and managing - hundreds or thousands of times, for each customer - are still present. Here's what that looks like:

Citrix Cloud is a hosting service built on the same on-premises FMA architecture

Can you name another company that has successfully hosted on-prem architecture and made it a cloud service? No! Salesforce, Workday, and NetSuite, are all examples of cloud companies that abandoned the on-premises approach and started from scratch. And don’t think that switching to VMware HorizonAir will be any better. It essentially has all the same downsides with no upside. It's extremely time-consuming and costly to rollout. Plus, you’ll have to re-train the entire staff on the new solution. At the end, you will still be left with an outdated solution.

Don’t migrate to FMA, switch to Workspot

If you’re looking to migrate off IMA, make sure to look closely under the hood and ask hard questions of vendors to understand the implications of vastly different Citrix Cloud and Workspot solutions. Here are some key characteristics of Workspot’s innovative Cloud Apps service on Azure:

  • Deploy in days - not months! Need we say more?
  • Predictable per user costs: Workspot optimizes Azure costs by bundling all desktops, applications, compute, storage, and networking components into a single, predictable bill.
  • Instant-on and instant scalability: The cloud-native architecture is built on stateless micro-services using containers. You can get started today deploying 1000s of apps and desktops. No need to acquire data center infrastructure. Scaling up is also instantaneous.
  • High performance for end-users globally: You can automatically deploy VDI to the Azure region(s) closest to your users, and thereby ensure optimal performance. Then, you simply manage everything from a single management console.
  • The only 100% cloud native architecture optimized for Azure: Workspot is always up-to-date with the latest features. And new features are released every few weeks.

Need proof? Here’s a customer success story

After customers rollout Workspot, they can’t stop raving about the benefits. If you’re wondering whether Workspot has the potential to transform your IT forever, check out how one of our customers--the largest ophthalmology practice in the nation--put our solution to work:

A decade after installing its legacy app publishing infrastructure, Houston Eye Associates (HEA) was stuck on an old version of Microsoft Windows server. This meant drivers and hardware couldn’t be replaced. The resulting IT slow-down dramatically impacted doctor productivity and patient satisfaction. Here’s what Tom Merkle, HEA’s Director of IT, had to say about their results with Workspot:

“The speed of our systems increased dramatically, saving 30-60 minutes per day of wasted time. That’s the difference between seeing patients on time and being 1 hour behind.”

The NetFlix of Apps and Desktops

If you’ve been spending way too much time and money with XenApp over the years and you're ready for the next-generation of VDI and the simplicity that comes with it, try Workspot. It’s the Netflix of apps and desktops: access apps from any device, from anywhere, securely, and with unmatched performance. And you just get a predictable monthly bill. No surprises and no hassles. Instead of spending more resources troubleshooting an outdated virtual app solution, you'll be the cloud-savvy person who set your IT team free to work on more strategic projects that add value to the business!
