What is VDI 2.0?
VDI 2.0 is the next generation of desktop virtualization and application delivery. Built for the cloud and hyper-converged infrastructure, VDI 2.0 enables IT to deliver virtualized desktops and applications without the cost and performance challenges associated with VDI 1.0 and the legacy datacenter architecture.
To level set, VDI 1.0 was hobbled by performance and cost issues:
- High CapEx & OpEx of servers and storage
- High OpEx of VDI software
- Poor User Experience for many classes of apps and on mobile devices
As an industry, we couldn't fix VDI directly because the architecture was so tied to the rules of the legacy datacenter architecture. So we built VDI 2.0, from scratch, for the cloud and hyper-converged infrastructure to solve 3 key pain points that users have endured with the old solution.
1. Simpler VDI: Cloud + Hyper-convergence lets you move operational components into the cloud and simplify the data center into a single box.
VDI 1.0 on a legacy data center architecture required:
- Servers for portals, desktops, monitoring, brokering, provisioning
- High Performance SANs
- Networking to connect all of the components together.
VDI 2.0 has two components: Cloud and Hyper-converged Infrastructure (HCI).
VDI 2.0 uses the Workspot cloud based control plane for portal, load balancing, brokering, monitoring, configuring end points, and provisioning VDI VMs. These operational component functions are now fully hosted in the cloud and requires no individual management or maintenance. The CapEx previously spent on these devices is now zero and OpEx previously spent to managing these device is now signficantly reduced to just a fraction of a FTE. By moving all of the operational components required to deliver VDI, VDI 2.0's footprint in data center is limited to just the components needed to host the VMs.
VDI 2.0 leverages hyper-converged infrastructure to reduce the data center footprint into a single box. Hyper-converged infrastracture combines the compute, storage, and hypervisor hosting the desktops into a single box. Hyper-convergence can reduce the footprint by as much as 90% and up to 60% lower CapEx.
What's more, scaling up VDI users is greatly simplified and predictable. Adding more users just requires adding an additional HCI box. The operational components are in the cloud, which scales instantly and infinitely. The combination of the two technologies maximizes the reduction in CapEx and OpEx that hampered VDI 1.0.
2. Lower VDI TCO: Remove the Citrix and VMWare tax.
VDI 2.0 leverages the Nutanix Acropolis hypervisor packaged on the Nutanix XCP hyper-converged infrastructure devices. The purpose built hypervisor for HCI enables IT to host and deliver VDI VMs without the need for Citrix or VMWare licenses. In addition, IT does not have to go thru the headaches of migrating a legacy software infrastructure forward to capture the benefits of HCI. Learn more about the Workspot - Nutanix partnership.
3. Faster VDI: Shortest path = Best user experience, regardless of platform
VDI 1.0 forced all users to go thru a desktop to access any application. However in a mobile world, that doesn't yield the best user experience if you have to access a desktop on your iPhone to get to apps and data. VDI 2.0 has workspace built-in giving IT flexibility in how applications are delivered. IT can deliver desktops as well as direct access to applications and content repositories. VDI 2.0 is the next generation of desktop and application delivery. By leveraging cloud and hyper-converged technologies, VDI 2.0 is not bound by the rules of the legacy data center, which made VDI 1.0 so complex, costly, and lacking in performance. IT can now deliver desktop and applications to any device with lower cost and complexity and with the best performance.
