MDM to Manage BYOx is an Oxymoron

How to Manage BYOx

Over the past year, there have been a LOT of articles about how to manage BYOx with MDM or EMM.  Here's what I've been able to gather about the Bring Your Own dilemma that so many companies are faced with:

MDM OR EMM APPLIES ONLY TO SOME TYPES OF DEVICES, NOT ALL

MDM or EMM really apply only to phones and tablets today. They may also manage Windows 10 going forward, but most PCs in the world run Windows 7 today. But since managing PCs/Macs is on the roadmap for most MDM/EMM vendors today, let's assume that MDM or EMM will manage all devices going forward.

YOU CAN'T HAVE MORE THAN ONE 'MDM' ON A SINGLE DEVICE

I looked at the various ownership of BYOx scenarios, i.e. who owns or "brings" the device:byox enterprise mobility policy

  • Employee
  • Contractor
  • Partner
  • Acquired company

Since only one organization can manage a device, by definition contractor, partner, or acquired company devices cannot be managed because that user has to roam in and out of different company IT resources. So the second, third, and fourth BYOx scenarios cannot be managed.

Let's focus on the first use case - personal devices of employees. It's a question of choice. Will an employee allow IT to manage a personal device? What's in it for the employee? Since managing a device entails some restrictions by IT on the device, why would I as an employee consent to that? Of course, IT could take the draconian viewpoint that only managed personal devices will be allowed.  If that's the case each employee would have to make a choice to balance productivity increases vs. sacrificing control. It's very unlikely that a 100% of users will choose to sacrifice control over their personal devices. In our customers, we see that less than 50% of the employees choose this option for their employees' phones. And most of them do not choose this option for their tablets, PCs, or Macs.

Our philosophy in building the Workspot solution has been to enable secure access to business apps and data without having to manage the device. We believe that more than 80% of the devices in the world are not and will not be managed by IT going forward.

Gartner analysts agree" “By 2018, more than half of all bring your own device (BYOD) users that currently have an MDM agent will be managed by an agentless solution,” stated Gartner's Rob Smith, John Girard, and Dionisio Zumerle.
