Traditional Enterprise Software will Always Lose to Cloud-First SaaS

When I was the General Manager at Citrix of the XenApp and XenDesktop business, our goal was to do 1 major release every 18 months and 2 minor releases in between.  That's right - 18 months!  Do you think that made any customer happy?

Here's how a typical feature request from a customer would get handled:

If one customer told us they wanted a feature in Jan of Year 1, we would then start looking for other customers who would benefit from the same feature. It would take us 6-9 months to determine that it was an important feature,  and then we would look to slot it into a major or minor release. If it was a small feature, then we could slot it into the next minor release which would be available to customers 9 months later. So the customer would see the feature in a release in the summer of year 2. By the time they upgraded and validated the feature it could be another 6-9 months. A minor feature would take nearly 2 years to make it out to end users. A major feature could take 3 or more years for a customer to see it in production.   Quite possibly, that customer who made the request was no longer even working at the company more than three years later.

A 100% cloud architecture allows us to close gaps more efficiently. With a 100% cloud-first architecture, we can update our product every 6-8 weeks. In 3 months, we can go from customer feedback, to slotting it into a release, to making it available in production.

innovation
For example, say two products - one traditional on-premises and the other SaaS - start at the same value point. The line on top is the perfect value for any given customer. No product will ever reach there, but since a SaaS solution can iterate more rapidly, it can reach closer to perfect value faster than the corresponding on-premises product.

This speed of innovation is only possible with a 100% cloud architecture. We believe that the right architecture to keep up with the speed of mobile is a 100% cloud workspace as a  service solution.

Another advantage of Cloud-First SaaS is its efficiencies and abilities to accommodate the "tsunami of devices" entering the network. In order to stay ahead, IT needs a single solution to securely deliver apps and data to any PC, Mac, iOS, and Android device.   And the solution needs to be K.I.S.S.

If you'd like to learn more, check out our ebook "Workspace for BYOD", which addresses the challenges you face with the "tsunami of devices" and highlights how a Workspace is your single solution to K.I.S.S.
