When I was the General Manager at Citrix of the XenApp and XenDesktop business, our goal was to do 1 major release every 18 months and 2 minor releases in between. That's right - 18 months! Do you think that made any customer happy?
Here's how a typical feature request from a customer would get handled:
If one customer told us they wanted a feature in Jan of Year 1, we would then start looking for other customers who would benefit from the same feature. It would take us 6-9 months to determine that it was an important feature, and then we would look to slot it into a major or minor release. If it was a small feature, then we could slot it into the next minor release which would be available to customers 9 months later. So the customer would see the feature in a release in the summer of year 2. By the time they upgraded and validated the feature it could be another 6-9 months. A minor feature would take nearly 2 years to make it out to end users. A major feature could take 3 or more years for a customer to see it in production. Quite possibly, that customer who made the request was no longer even working at the company more than three years later.
Another advantage of Cloud-First SaaS is its efficiencies and abilities to accommodate the "tsunami of devices" entering the network. In order to stay ahead, IT needs a single solution to securely deliver apps and data to any PC, Mac, iOS, and Android device. And the solution needs to be K.I.S.S.
